Byzantine Emperor Anastasius ordered the construction of tower and it was completed in the year of 528. Although it suffered from a serious damage in 1204, the Geneoeses rebuilt and named it as, “Jesus Tower” in 1348.
When the Turks conquered the city of Constantinapole under the commanf of Mehmet the Conqueror, the tower went through so many restorations and repairment. All of the prisoners of war who were working in Kasımpasa shipyard were housed in Galata Tower.
Under the order of Sultan Murat III, it was turned into an observatory but it was closed in a short period of time. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Ahmet Celebi materialized the first appropriate flight with his artificial wings in the history of aviation. He took off from the 183 foot tall Galata Tower and landed successfully to Uskudar which is located at the other side of Istanbul. We recommend you taking as many photos as you can. You will be enchanted when you see Istanbul from above.
How to go to Galata Tower
From the end of the Istıklal Street, you should walk down approximately 250m and then you will see the tower.

The entrance to Galata Tower is estimated 25 TL for foreigners.
