Istanbul Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute

The history of Kandilli Institute (Kandilli Rasathanesi) dates back to the time of the Ottoman Empire.

It was established in 1867 with the help of the French government but the significance of Kandilli began to emerge in the year of 1894 which was also a turning point in the history of Ottoman Empire. In this year, a huge earthquake brought about a massive destruction in the city of Istanbul. Therefore, Sultan Abdulhamid II decided to bring two seismographic devices from Italy by paying 6400 Frank. In the year of 1982, the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Instıtute became a part of the University of the Bosphorus. Today, the Institute carries out its work in order to detect the upcoming earthquakes.
